CET Certification Overview

Certification for Elevator Technicians


The Certified Elevator Technician (CET) program ensures that technicians meet the highest industry standards in technical expertise, safety practices, and compliance with elevator codes and regulations. The program is designed to validate the knowledge and hands-on experience required for success in the elevator and escalator industry.

  • Qualification Requirements

    Applicants must complete the online application and submit all required documentation and fees within 90 days of starting the process. Once approved, applicants have 365 days to complete the exam, including any necessary retakes

    The following are the minimum criteria for applying for the Certified Accessibility and Private Residence Lift Technician (CAT) Program:

    Application Requirements:

    • Must have a minimum of 10,000 documented hours (5 years) of on-the-job training within the elevator industry by December 31, 2007 to apply with experience.
    • Alternatively, applicants may qualify by completing an education program through NAEC CET Training Program, NEIEP, L.I.T.S., or an equivalent program.

    Knowledge Requirements:
    Applicants must demonstrate knowledge across safety practices, equipment terminology, electrical systems, and industry standards, including:

    • Construction-oriented safety practices while working on or installing elevator equipment as outlined in The Elevator Industry Field Employees’ Safety Handbook.
    • Elevator equipment and technical terminology as covered in the Elevator Maintenance Manual.
    • Electrical principles, circuitry, and safety practices from the NEMI Installation Manual.
    • Compliance with safety codes and inspection procedures in ASME A17.1 Safety Code for Elevators & Escalators and ASME A17.3 Safety Code for Existing Installations.

    Exam Requirement:

    • Applicants must pass a comprehensive certification exam based on all criteria listed above.
  • Program Structure

    Once the application is approved, candidates have 365 days to pass the exam. If the applicant fails, the following retake policy applies:

    • First Attempt: Retake allowed after a 30-day waiting period.
    • Second Attempt: Another retake allowed after 30 days.
    • Third Attempt: A $100 retest fee is required, with another 30-day waiting period.
    • After Three Failures: A 180-day waiting period is required before reapplying.
  • Costs & Fees

    The non-refundable application fee depends on the applicant’s membership status:

    • Experience Path:
      NAEC Members: $765 USD
      Non-Members: $1,230 USD
    • Education Path:
      NAEC Members: $110 USD
      Non-Members: $165 USD

CAT Certification Overview

Certification for Accessibility Technicians

The Certified Accessibility and Private Residence Lift Technician (CAT) Program is designed to ensure technicians are equipped with the necessary skills to work safely and effectively with accessibility equipment. This program combines industry knowledge, safety practices, and technical expertise.

  • Qualification Requirements

    Applicants must complete the online application and submit all required documentation and fees within 90 days of starting the process. Once approved, applicants have 365 days to complete the exam, including any necessary retakes.

    The following are the minimum criteria for applying for the Certified Accessibility and Private Residence Lift Technician (CAT) Program:

    Experience Requirements:

    • Have a minimum of 6,000 documented hours (3 years) of on-the-job training within the accessibility/residential industry as of December 31, 2014.).
    • Alternatively, applicants may qualify by completing an education program through NAEC CAT Training Program, or an equivalent program.

    Knowledge Requirements:

    Applicants must demonstrate knowledge across key industry areas, including:

    • Construction-oriented safety practices as outlined in the Elevator Industry Field Employees’ Safety Handbook.
    • Accessibility equipment and industry terminology.
    • Electrical systems and safety practices as covered in the National Electrical Code.
    • Safety codes and standards for installation and inspection including ASME A17.1- and A18.1- standards for platform lifts, elevators, and chairlifts.

    Certification Exam Requirement:

    • Applicants must pass a 160-question exam covering these topics, with questions drawn from a comprehensive database.

QEI Certification Overview

Inspector Safety and Compliance Certification

The Qualified Elevator Inspector (QEI) Certification ensures inspectors possess the necessary skills, knowledge, and education to confirm that elevators, escalators, and other conveyances are code-compliant and operating safely. This program establishes a standard for elevator inspectors and provides public safety through compliance verification.

  • Qualification Requirements

    Applicants must meet specific experience and education criteria to qualify for the QEI Certification program. The complete online application, including all supporting documentation, must be submitted before NAEC can review and approve candidates.

    The following are the minimum criteria for NAEC to accept an application to become a Qualified Elevator Inspector (QEI):

    Experience Requirements:

    Option A:

    • Four (4) years of documented education and experience in the mechanical and/or electrical aspects of the elevator industry.
    • Must meet the A17.1 Code definition of “elevator personnel.”
    • At least one year of experience performing inspections or witnessing tests as specified in A17.1 Sections 8.10 or 8.11 and A18.1 (this year may overlap with the four years of experience).

    Option B:

    • Two years of college courses in an elevator-related engineering field.
    • At least one year of inspection or test-witnessing experience as outlined in A17.1 and A18.1.

    Option C:

    • Meet the A17.1 definition of “elevator personnel” and provide documented training.
    • At least one year of inspection or test-witnessing experience in one of these roles:
    • Inspector or trainee under the supervision of an inspector for an enforcing authority.
    • Licensed inspector working under the jurisdiction of an enforcing authority.
    • Trainee working under supervision within the jurisdiction of an enforcing authority.

    Knowledge Requirements:

    • Meet the ASME QEI-1 Standard and the relevant experience requirements.
    • Provide supporting documentation of industry experience or education, such as transcripts (including NEIEP & CET), licenses, degrees, or other relevant materials.
    • Submit copies of any previous or current QEI certifications, if applicable.

    Approved applicants must pass the QEI Certification exam. The exam evaluates the candidate’s understanding of technical and safety requirements related to inspections.

    Once the application is approved, candidates have 365 days to pass the exam. If the applicant fails, the following retake policy applies:

    • Second Attempt: Another retake allowed after 30 days.
