1940s

The Fish Fries

NAEC’s origins began with informal "Fish Fries," that lead to the forming of a cooperative.

1950s

NAEC Founded

NAEC was officially formed during the annual gathering.

1960s

Board Expansion

The Board increased from 6 to 12 members reflecting the growing membership and industry influence

1970s

Mid-Year Seminar

NAEC held its first Mid-Year Management Seminar, relocated to Atlanta, and saw steady membership growth.

1980s

Industry Expands

Leadership changes and record-breaking convention attendance marked a decade of expansion.

1990s

Permanent Headquarters

NAEC established its first permanent headquarters, hosted its 50th Annual Convention, and gained global recognition.

2000s

Education & Certification

New education programs, including CET and CAT, solidified NAEC’s role in industry training and certification.

2010s

National accreditation

NAEC’s apprenticeship standards and CET certification achieved national accreditation, reinforcing workforce development.

2020s

Celebrating 75 years, NAEC surpassed 700 members and continues to drive industry education and innovation.

Our founder

Honoring Our Founder

William C. Sturgeon, a founding member and NAEC’s first Executive Director, shaped the industry in countless ways. He also founded Elevator World, and his legacy is honored through the William C. Sturgeon Distinguished Service Award, given annually to individuals making a lasting impact in the field. Applications for the award open yearly prior to the Fall Convention & Exposition.
